Off season update

Masoala Forest Lodge is closed between January and April each year.
During this time, our team focuses on the essential maintenance that keeps the lodge running smoothly for the season ahead.

A significant portion of this work is dedicated to roofing. Many hours go into renewing our palm-thatched roofs, using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. Historical records trace these methods back to at least the early 19th century, reflecting a long-standing relationship between people and their environment.

At the heart of this craftsmanship is the ravinala plant, a remarkable and sustainable building material. Valued for its rapid regeneration, local availability, and natural resilience, ravinala is ideally suited to withstand the region’s challenging climate, including cyclones.

The material is purchased locally, which means 100% of the expenses for roofing maintenance are reinvested directly into the surrounding community—supporting local suppliers, preserving traditional craftsmanship, and ensuring that every roof we restore helps sustain the people and skills that make this place so special.
